black ice cream

New-trend alert! This $7 inky treat from Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream in NYC is spreading like wildfire across the web and is probably popping up in your social feeds right now. Curious as to the what, the why, and the how? Here are the deets. Why is it black? This ice cream contains coconut ash, which, according to Morgenstern’s owner Nick Morgernstern, is “another form of activated charcoal.” If you haven’t been keeping up, activated charcoal has been the It healthy ingredient lately, thanks to its claim that it combats toxins in the body.

But why? You may think the folks at Morgenstern’s chose activated charcoal because of its purported health benefits, but they actually just liked the visual effect using coconut ash had. And guess what? Indeed, this super-black, super-goth dessert has worked the internet into a frenzy.

Will it stain your teeth and clothes? Definitely! Is it incredibly creepy-cool when it drips down your hands and arms? Definitely!

Wait, what is coconut ash again? The “charred and processed remains of a coconut shell.” As with activated charcoal, which is processed at high heat, coconut ash acts as a filter.

Is it good? It is if you like coconut ice cream. The ice cream is said to have an “intense” coconut flavor.

Is it healthy? Probably not. There’s still loads of sugar and cream, so don’t plan your diet around it. Nutritionists are split on whether activated charcoal actually does anything. There’s no research available that proves it does. Bottom line: Try it ’cause it’s weird and fun, not for any alleged health benefits.
